29 Chimera Court, Sunday morning

With all the inhabitants and guests around, somebody needed to make breakfast. And the stew had been decent, but Miguel had opinions about breakfast. Plus it didn't seem fair to leave it all to Nathan.

So, he had a cast-iron skillet out over the fireplace and was making a frittata. There'd been sausage and bacon and vegetables in the fridge, along with the queso he hadn't given to the mice, and he hoped nobody was vegetarian. If they were, he'd just leave the meat out next time; he had a feeling two was the least number they'd need with everybody here.

There was also a pot in one corner of the fireplace simmering along with hot water and coffee grounds, because breakfast required coffee, okay?

It was actually pretty cozy.

"And here I thought I would be the breakfast chef," Mitsutada said with a smile as he wandered into the living room, blanket draped around him like a cloak. Hey, it wasn't the warmest in this storm, especially in his bedroom.

"Nice use of the fire, though. I imagine our stove isn't in working condition."

"There's still a third of the fire left if you want to grab a pot or pan," Miguel said, smiling. "Yeah, the power's still out and the stove's electric, so." He shrugged.

"I think I owe you an explanation of Sengo, still," Mitsutada mused as he went to poke around the pantry. He returned shortly with some long skewers and a small bowl of veggies, which he started to cut into pieces. He fully intended to roast them, campfire style.

"He's a Muramasa, one of the so-called demon blades. I think that reputation has gone to his head a little. Tonbokiri, his brother, has to keep him from undressing all the time."

"Are demons known for going around in the nude?" Miguel asked. "Or is he just trying to get people riled up?"

He supposed that was one way of doing it.

"Probably the latter," Mitsutada said, just full on stabbing a full tomato with a skewer and moving to roast it whole over the fire. "He seems to delight in embarrassing Tonbokiri at any chance. I'm lucky that most of my brothers are far less... odd."

"Well, mostly."

Tsurumaru was a very different sort of odd.

"My brother's got his own issues," Miguel said, "but I'm pretty sure he's never made a habit of streaking. He still likes to embarrass me, but I'm pretty sure that's just a kid brother thing."

"Your turn, is it?" Nathan smiled at Miguel as he peered at what he was making. "If that isn't enough, the bread Verity made last night would probably supplement it fairly well."

Miguel nodded. "There's still plenty left. And I was planning on a second one, since we've got extra mouths to feed." A lot of them. "And Magnus."

He moved the coffee pot to make room. "Wasn't sure when you'd be up, but if you want to grab the other pot, there's just water in it, for tea."

"Thank you," Nathan said, temporarily vanishing back into the kitchen to get a rather more sizeable mug than he usually used for tea, and then making his way back into the living room to pour his water. "The weather is still going strong today, I see."

Fandom didn't half-ass much of anything, clearly.

"Snow, snow, and more snow, with a side of wind and a garnish of thunder," Miguel said. "You think if we stood outside and yelled at the island we'd had enough, it'd listen?"

"I've never known being angry at the island to work in anybody's favor before," Nathan noted, "but you're certainly welcome to try."

He checked his tea.

"I'll be right here when you're done."

Inside, warm, by the fire.

The scent of coffee roused Verity to wakefulness. The couch in front of the fireplace had been warmer than Liam's bedroom had been and they'd decided to crash there for the night, along with all of the mice, who had delighted finding places in, on, and under the couch where they could tuck themselves away for the night.

"Someone's making coffee?" she asked, voice still thick with sleep. "I love everyone in this place."

Not to mention, the couch did a far better job of fitting the two of them than the recliner Liam usually slept in.

"Morning," he said fondly. "I can't claim responsibility for the coffee, but I hope you still l- like me anyway," he teased, stumbling a bit over which l-word to use, considering how they'd only been doing the dating thing for a few months now.

Verity yawned, giving him a sleepy smile. So far they'd done a lot of sleeping together--that wasn't actually sleeping together. She found this pretty hilarious, truth be told. "Tell you what," she offered, "make me a cup and you'll still be my favorite, no matter who made the coffee actually appear."

There. That nicely skirted the question of which l-word to use entirely.

Well, eventually, hopefully, they'd have that Conversation regarding the whole sleeping together thing. Because, yes, thanks to alien biology there definitely would need to be a Conversation.

"Seems like a fair deal," Liam said, moving to get up.

Yeah, Verity wasn't in a huge rush to get to any conversations that required a capital letter.

"He's the best," Verity said in a stage whisper to the mouse snoozing by her ear, while curling up further under the blanket.

"Hail," it murmured sleepily, unable to let the opportunity pass.

"...Okay, what else am I smelling?" she asked. "How did everyone manage to put together a real breakfast?"

Miguel grinned. "Coffee is required."

"I mean, only if you want to function," Verity said, giving him a thumbs up, the rest of her hand clutching the mug. "If you're willing to spend the day zombieing around, I'm sure something else would be fine."

"I do not zombie," Miguel said firmly. Zombies were just...ew. He toasted her with his own mug. "Coffee. Definitely coffee. No matter how much Nathan makes fun of me for it."

Kathy agreed with you, Miguel.

"Nathan made fun of me for wanting a hot shower," Verity said. "Just to give some context there."

"I'm so glad I live with people who actually know their way around a kitchen," Liam said gratefully. "Or a fireplace, as the case may be," he added after a beat.

[what_the_shock]

"I'm glad to actually get to cook most of the time," Miguel said. "So it works out. Frittata?"

"Please," Liam said gratefully. "I usually end up just grabbing breakfast from the Perk and I'm going to bet that they're not open today."

"Not unless they've got a better generator than the diner," Miguel said. He checked the frittata and cut out a good-sized piece, getting it onto a plate. "One fork or two?"

"Two," Liam said after a moment. "I'll probably end up sharing with the bottomless stomach over there," he added, jabbing a thumb in Verity's direction.
